2 Kings 8:26 "Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign; and he reigned one year in Jerusalem "
2 Chronicles 22:2 " Forty and two years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem "
There appears to be a contradictory mention of the age of Ahaziah when he began to reign as king of Judah in Jerusalem, a difference of 20 years between the record in 2 Kings and that in 2 Chronicles. How can this problem be solved?
The record in 2 Chronicles 22:2 actually reads when translated more literally, "A son of 42 years was Ahaziah ". This may well be a reference to the standing of the whole house of Omri to which Ahaziah was connected via his mother. It was indeed in the 42nd year of the reign of the house of Omri that Ahaziah began to reign, he himself was at the time 22 years old as the record in 2 Kings confirms.
The difficulty is a bit in the translation, but mainly arises from not realizing which time periods in relation to Ahaziah are being spoken of in each respective record.
